Founded in Brisbane in 2012, Mott & Mulberry is an independent family business focusing on supporting and promoting the best of Australian artists, designers, and boutique fashion labels. They stock a unique range of quality products and gifts that highlight the talent found throughout the continent. Mott & Mulberry takes inspiration from New York’s Mott and Mulberry Streets, in both spirit and namesake.
The junction, that in the early 1900s connected the East and the West, is now known as Little Australia and is adjacent to Little Italy and Chinatown. Mott Street, regarded as Chinatown’s unofficial “Main Street,” is lined with tea houses, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Mulberry Street, which runs parallel to Mott Street, became known as Little Italy after the mass immigration from Italy in the 1880s. These vibrant communities made a home away from home, with early traders importing goods - fashion, food, wares - and sharing them with the wider community. Mott & Mulberry have transported this spirit of culture, trade, artisanship, and entrepreneurship to Australia. Their third store is fittingly situated in the Brisbane Airport, an environment synonymous with travel and cultural exploration.
Lofty, exposed ceilings coupled with concrete and copper lends itself to the industrial feel whilst baby pinks and peachy marble tie in with Mott & Mulberry’s brand colours. With powder-coated steel and aluminium, Staron engineered solid surface, laminate and melamine board used throughout the 194 square metre premise seems endless and airy. The usage of glass and elements of natural light also add to the wow factor of the fit-out.
This project proved to be more than what met the eye, incorporating design elements inclusive of both front and rear frontage too. Each piece was individually designed and then fabricated by Woodland Shopfitting to ensure that each piece fit together perfectly which is highlighted through the end product.
The design incorporated the existing architecture of the airport inclusive of the vaulted ceiling and copious amounts of natural lighting. This space perfectly encapsulates the fluidity of the airport redesign.
This project ran smoothly, to both budget and timeframes and not only was the client extremely pleased with the end result but so was the centre management. Mott & Mulberry Brisbane Airport celebrates the historical importance of travel and honours the cross-cultural progress that these early traders and entrepreneurs made the world over.
